RAP recycling

RAP recycling systems

Crushing, screening and feeding reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) so it can replace part of the new aggregate and binder.

RAP — reclaimed asphalt pavement — saves bitumen and stone, but it varies from job to job. It has to be crushed to break up lumps, screened into sizes and stockpiled so the plant gets a consistent material.

Cold RAP added to a batch plant uses the heat of superheated new aggregate; higher percentages need a separate RAP dryer. The percentage you can use depends on your specification, the RAP quality and the plant’s heat balance — we check all three rather than quote a headline number.

How it works

  1. 01

    Receiving and testing

Milled material is checked for binder content, size and moisture.

  2. 02

    Crushing and cleaning

Lumps are broken and debris and metal removed.

  3. 03

    Screening and stockpiling

RAP is split into sizes and stored separately.

  4. 04

    Metered feed

A RAP bin and belt scale deliver a set rate to the plant.

  5. 05

    Mixing and verification

Trial batches confirm mix quality at the planned percentage.

Common configurations

  • RAP crushing & screening line

Prepares RAP before it reaches the plant.

  • Cold RAP addition

RAP fed cold to the mixer or hot elevator.

  • Hot RAP system

Separate RAP dryer for higher percentages.

Tell us before we quote

  • Source and condition of your RAP
  • Target RAP percentage and the specification that allows it
  • RAP moisture and maximum lump size

Check before ordering

  • Heat balance of the dryer at the planned percentage
  • Steam and dust venting where cold RAP enters
  • Weighing of RAP for every batch

Questions

How much RAP can an asphalt batch plant use?

It depends on whether RAP is added cold or heated separately, on RAP quality and on your specification. We calculate the heat balance and confirm the percentage with trial mixes.

Can RAP be added to an existing plant?

Usually yes, with a RAP bin, conveyor and weighing. Structure, controls and heat balance are checked first.
